The suction cup provides the connection between the part to be handled and the gripping system.

A vacuum suction cup is a device used in many industrial sectors to handle, lift and move different products. Its operating principle is based on creating a vacuum between the surface to be gripped and the suction cup itself, generating sufficient holding force to retain the part. Once the vacuum supply is stopped, the pressure is balanced again and the part is released.

Generally manufactured from NBR, EPDM, silicone, polyurethane or vinyl, these suction cups are suitable for a wide variety of environments, including the food, pharmaceutical and automotive industries. They can be designed in a flat version for fast gripping on smooth surfaces, or in a bellows version to compensate for height variations and handle more fragile objects. Oval models are also available for elongated shapes, as well as multiple suction cup configurations that distribute the gripping force over more complex parts.

From a technical standpoint, the suction force depends on the vacuum level generated and the contact surface area. Vacuum systems must also provide an adequate airflow to ensure fast and secure gripping. In addition, airtightness is essential: a worn or unsuitable suction cup lip causes leaks and can compromise handling reliability. In industry, these devices are valued for their simplicity, reliability and high versatility. They are used for handling parts on automated assembly lines, delicate food products in the food industry, and sensitive electronic components.

Key advantages include easy maintenance, fast cycle times and safe handling. However, certain limitations must be taken into account: porous or very rough surfaces often require a specific suction cup or a higher airflow, while the selected material must withstand temperature constraints or contact with chemicals. It is also essential to check that the maximum load supported by the suction cup meets the requirements of the part being handled.
