Vacuum regulators are intended to maintain a constant partial pressure on the downstream side, irrespective of the amount of vacuum upstream. They function with a membrane and piston; they do not introduce air into the system, which would decrease the amount of vacuum. They are useful whenever a smaller partial vacuum than that provided by the system is needed.
